The New Mexico Higher Education Department has made significant progress in creating cohesion among all institutions in New Mexico. Common course numbering, meta-majors and general education reforms will significantly ease credit transfer and articulation amongst New Mexico’s higher education institutions and provide guided pathways to success for students. Other state policy initiatives include alternative methods of remediation, dual credit reforms, and Advanced Placement articulation. The definitive goal of these initiatives is to reduce the amount of time and money needed to graduate. Governor Martinez established the goal of having 66 percent of working-age New Mexicans have a degree or post-high school credential by 2030. The attainment goal has been named the “Route to 66”. To kick-start this initiative, The New Mexico Higher Education Department hosted the first of several strategic planning meetings, later renamed the New Mexico Statewide Higher Education Master-plan committee. The focus of the committee and planning will result in the development of shared strategies and goals for efficiency in higher education delivery as well as increased completion rates.
