Raymond J. Rice, President and Provost of the University of Maine at Presque Isle and a professor of English, has been a member of the University faculty for 22 years. His leadership roles on campus have included serving as Chair of the College of Arts and Sciences, Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, and, since 2016, President of the institution.
Dr. Rice has been a key contributor to the University of Maine System’s One University Initiative, co-chairing the committee that established a General Education Transfer agreement among Maine’s public universities and Maine’s Community Colleges. In addition, he has led UMPI in becoming the first public university in New England to offer a fully accredited, online Competency Based Education Business degree program, which helps adults with some college but no degree to finish their coursework. As of Fall 2019, he will serve on the Board of the Competency-Based Education Network.
Dr. Rice graduated from Dickinson College in 1989 with a B.A. in English and Latin with a secondary school certification. He went on to earn his M.A. in English in 1992 and his Ph.D. in English in 1998, both from the University of Connecticut.
