Rainer Steinwandt serves as Dean of the College of Science at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). Before joining UAH, he served as Chair of Florida Atlantic University’s Department of Mathematical Sciences. In collaboration with FAU’s Math Learning Center, the department transitioned its Calculus with Analytic Geometry 1 and 2 courses to the Learning Assistant model. Accessibility to the department’s College Algebra and Math for Liberal Arts courses has been improved through a co-requisite approach. In addition, the department implemented major-specific service courses and expanded the use of open educational resources.

Before joining FAU, Rainer was with the University of Karlsruhe in Germany, where he completed his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science, researching topics in computer algebra. Today, his research focus is in cryptology and its interplay with quantum computing. Rainer’s research has been funded through the Air Force Research Laboratory, the German Federal Office for Information Security, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the National Science Foundation, the National Security Agency, and the NATO Science for Peace and Security program.
