Maine recently adopted a statewide attainment goal: by 2025, 60% of Mainers will hold a workforce or education credential of value. This initiative, MaineSpark, is a 10-year commitment from Maine’s most influential education and business leaders, working together to connect people with the resources needed to thrive in today’s economy. Maine is at a critical point of need. We need more skilled and educated workers to fill the over 15,000 job vacancies in 2018. College completion, including adults with some college but no degree, is key to reaching this goal. Currently Maine is looking at a variety of strategies including the Think 30 and 15 to Finish campaigns to help encourage students to take a full-time class-load spread over an academic year. Our colleges are also looking to move forward with the Math Pathways and Guided Pathway recommendations. These initiatives are in the beginning stages as we begin to work together as a statewide network.
