Susan Kater is the Associate Vice Chancellor, Institutional Strategy, Research, & Effectiveness for the Maricopa County Community College District in Tempe, Arizona. She has held a variety of administration positions during her tenure at Maricopa, including serving as the Special Assistant to the Chancellor, and prior to that, serving 20+ years at GateWay Community College. Sue has a Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of Arizona and her research interests and publications center on community college faculty and shared governance. Her publications include Understanding Community Colleges (Routledge, 2013, and in press for 2018); Community College Faculty: At Work in the New Economy (Palgrave MacMillan, 2007, 2011), New Directions for Community Colleges, and research articles. Sue is a former president of the Council for the Study of Community Colleges — one of the AACC affiliate councils — and is on the editorial boards of the Community College Review and The Review of Higher Education.
