Dr. Janelle Jennings-Alexander is a distinguished scholar, mother, and educator whose work is reshaping the landscape of higher education. Known by her colleagues as JJA, Dr. Jennings-Alexander holds a Ph.D. in Literature from Florida State University and is a two-time HBCU graduate. Her academic journey includes a Master of Science degree in Transformative Leadership from Bethune Cookman University and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Currently, Dr. Jennings-Alexander serves as a Strategy Director for Complete College America.
With nearly 20 years of experience in education, Dr. JJA has established herself as a thought leader in college language, literature, student success, and leadership. Dr. JJA believes in an engaged and inclusive approach to learning and, as a researcher, is interested in the intersection of racial literacy, critical discourse on race and equity, and the dismantling of white supremacy through the lens of African-American-authored fiction. Dr. Jennings-Alexander’s passion for education is matched only by her dedication to increasing student success, particularly within underrepresented and Black-identifying student populations, and centering issues of wellness and well-being.
In 2018, Dr. JJA was honored with the National Council for Teachers of English Early Career Educator of Color Award, which led to the publication of her impactful series of children’s books, “The Raleigh Green Book Project.” Her influence in academia continues to grow, as evidenced by her recognition in 2023 as one of 25 Leading Women in Higher Education by “Diverse Issues in Higher Education.” A frequent presenter at prestigious national conferences such as NCTE, Multiethnic Literature of the US (MELUS), Council on College Composition and Communication (CCCC), and College English Association (CEA), Dr. Jennings-Alexander consistently shares her insights and research with peers and emerging scholars through book chapters, articles, professional blogs, and book reviews.
Beyond her academic pursuits, Dr. Jennings-Alexander remains deeply connected to her community, volunteering with the Girl Scout Council of North Carolina Coastal Pines and fostering leadership skills in young women. She also embraces a rich personal life that fuels her creativity and balances her professional endeavors. Most recently, Dr. JJA unwinds and finds inspiration through the creative arts, cozy video gaming, and her family.
