The Ohio Department of Higher Education (formerly Ohio Board of Regents) is a Cabinet-level agency that oversees higher education for the state. Created in 1963, the agency operates under a nine-member advisory Ohio Board of Regents appointed by the Governor with Senate consent to nine-year terms, plus two ex-officio legislative representatives. The state’s SHEEO serves as a member of the Governor’s Cabinet, advising on higher education policy and implementing initiatives to make college more affordable while driving economic advancement. Ohio’s public higher education system includes 13 four-year universities, 23 community colleges, and Ohio Technical Centers. The Department authorizes degree programs, manages state financial aid, and develops statewide policies.
