Hawaii’s public higher education system is unified under the University of Hawaii (UH) System, which encompasses 10 campuses: three universities: UH Mānoa (flagship), UH Hilo, and UH West O‘ahu, and seven community colleges located across the islands (Honolulu, Kapiolani, Kauai, Leeward, Maui, Windward, and Hawaii Community College). The UH System is governed by an 11-member Board of Regents, whose members are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the legislature, following nominations from the Regents Candidate Advisory Council. The Board has exclusive authority over the internal structure, management, and operations of the university and also serves as the State Board for Career and Technical Education.
As the sole provider of public higher education in the state, the UH System embraces its responsibility to the indigenous people of Hawaiʻi by actively supporting Native Hawaiian participation and advancing programs in Hawaiian language, history, and culture.
