In a recent email welcoming his colleagues to the start of another academic year, Indiana University President Michael McRobbie took a moment to highlight efforts by the university to make attending college more affordable, including the implementation of flat-rate tuition and incentivizing on-time completion. You can see the excerpt below:
Not only are our efforts to attract promising students paying dividends, but the university also is working hard to make IU an affordable educational option. As you may know, we have taken a number of steps in recent years to address the cost of an IU degree as well as promote on-time graduation, including:
- Holding tuition increases for the current 2-year budget cycle to their lowest levels in nearly 40 years.
- Freezing tuition and fees for thousands of students on track to graduate in four years after their sophomore year.
- Extending our summer tuition discount program at IUPUI and our regional campuses for a third year this summer.
- Increasing the hours caps for flat-fee tuition at IU Bloomington from 17-18 credits, beginning this fall.
These efforts, along with our student financial literacy initiative that began last fall, are already making a noticeable difference. In fact, student loan borrowing for IU students across all campuses fell by 12 percent last year – a far greater decline than the national average.
Efforts that prioritize on-time completion are making a big difference for students and saving them and their families thousands of dollars in the process. We commend IU for their work and their commitment to making college more affordable.
