Increasing educational attainment in Mississippi is key to improving the state’s workforce and increasing economic development. Recognizing this, the Mississippi Legislature established the Education Achievement Council in 2010 to establish goals for the state, monitor and report on the state’s progress toward these goals. The Education Achievement Council consists of representatives of government, public, private and proprietary two-year and four-year institutions, K-12 schools, and leaders from business and mental health sectors. Some of the Mississippi initiatives include the Finish in Four campaign, which encourages community college students to graduate within four semesters and university students to graduate within four years; Complete 2 Compete, a statewide program focused on encouraging Mississippi adults who have completed some college, but no degree, to return to college and complete the requirements necessary to earn their degrees; and the Statewide Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement Task Force, established to create seamless transitions for students.
