The Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) serves as a coordinating body for the Illinois higher education system. It includes 10 members appointed by the Governor with Senate consent including one faculty member from the University of Illinois, 1 member from public university governing board (Governor appointed), 1 member from the private college/university board (Governor appointed), Chairman of Illinois Community College Board, Chairman of Illinois Student Assistance Commission, and 2 student members. IBHE oversees 9 public universities on 12 campuses; 39 community colleges on 48 campuses; 104 independent not-for-profit colleges and universities; 15 independent for-profit institutions; 26 out-of-state institutions; 213 private business and vocational schools; and 79 extension campuses.
