Dr. Betty Fortune serves as Executive Director of Success and Completion within the division of Strategic Planning and Institutional Effectiveness at Houston Community College (HCC). Within this capacity, she is responsible for ensuring that student success remains at the forefront of HCC’s strategic priorities. This work involves a holistic approach to student success by ensuring ongoing collaborative partnerships between the Student Services and Instructional Services areas of the college in order to develop and implement institutional student success goals and strategies. This unique position has oversight for the following student success efforts: Houston GPS, Achieving the DREAM, Texas Pathways, Gateway to Completion, and Ensuring Students are Learning through the American Association of Colleges and Universities.

As part of the College’s SACSCOC Accreditation efforts, Dr. Fortune serves as a co-chair in leading the development of the institution’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), where she works with a cross section of faculty, staff, and students throughout the HCC system to identify a topic through ongoing comprehensive planning and evaluation processes.
She serves as a member of the DANA Center Math Equity state-wide committee, which is designed to study MATH equity gaps experienced by various student populations to provide recommendations for closing the gaps to state entities.

Dr. Fortune has spent many years during her extensive tenure in higher education championing efforts to close equity gaps through her intentional and deliberate focus on the equity-mindedness, strategy alignment, and evidence-based practice. Though equity gaps continue to persist, she has maintained an unwavering dedication to strengthening efforts to narrow achievement gaps in order to ensure equitable outcomes for all students.
